Xhorse Dolphin XP005L Review: Touchscreen & Smooth Cutting

This is my first hands-on test of the Xhorse Dolphin XP005L, the latest automatic key cutting machine in the Dolphin II series. After spending some time using it, I was impressed by its design, ease of use, and overall cutting performance.

1. First Impressions & Design

One of the most noticeable upgrades on the Dolphin XP005L is the touchscreen display, which is about the size of a smartphone. The screen is clear, bright, and very responsive. Below the cutting area, the machine features an LED light that helps illuminate the workspace.

By default, the LED light is blue. Personally, I don’t like the blue lighting, but fortunately, it’s easy to change:

Settings path:

System → Machine Parameter → Cutting Setting → LED Status → White → Save

After saving, the LED light switches to white, which is much easier on the eyes.

2. Key Decoding Test (Honda Key)

Next, I tested the machine by duplicating a Honda key.

Operation path:

Universal Duplication → 4 Track External → Tip Align

The vice design really stands out here. It clamps the key securely and includes a solid support mechanism underneath, which adds stability during decoding and cutting.

After installing the original Honda key in the clamp, I tapped "Decode Key." The Dolphin II immediately started decoding. Simply close the protective cover and wait for the process to complete.

The decoding process is smooth and quiet, with no noticeable vibration. Everything runs very fluidly.

3. Performance & Practical Features

A few highlights became very clear during use:

① Battery-operated: The machine can run on its internal battery, making it portable and convenient for mobile work.

② Lightweight design: Easy to carry and transport.

③ Debris tray: A built-in tray underneath collects metal shavings neatly.

④ Clear tablet-style screen: The large display makes every step easy to follow.

Once decoding is finished, the machine displays a visual outline of the key on the screen. While it’s not artistic, it’s accurate and gives a clear idea of the key’s structure.

4. Key Cutting Test

After decoding, I removed the original key and installed a blank key onto the M5 clamp, then selected "Cut Key."

The Dolphin XP005L immediately began cutting. Remember to close the protective cover to prevent debris from spattering.

One feature I really like is the progress percentage displayed at the top of the screen during cutting. It gives a clear sense of how much time remains.

The cutting speed is fast, and once the first side was finished, the result was excellent. The cuts were clean and smooth, with a professional finish.

5. Touchscreen Experience

The touchscreen on the Xhorse Dolphin II XP005L is a major improvement over earlier touchscreen key cutting machines. Some early models on the market had unresponsive or confusing interfaces, but this one is intuitive, responsive, and very easy to use.

Overall, the Dolphin XP005L delivers a great user experience with modern design, reliable performance, and thoughtful features.

Xhorse Dolphin XP-005 Cut VW Audi HU162T Key Tutorial

Xhorse Dolphin XP-005 Key Cutting Machine supports cutting the latest HU162T key with 9/10 bittings, such as VW Golf 7 or Audi. This is a tutorial on how to cut this particular type of key.

1. Go to Cut By Bitting >> HU162T-10/ HU162T-9

Eg. Taking cut 9 bittings as an example.

2. Decode the front 9 bittings & select B clamp first, then continue to cut this side.

3. Return to the previous page, and select 3 bittings & D clamp. This will need another HU162T key blank to fix the key firmly. Go on to decode the key, then cut the key.

That's it!

The cutting steps apply to Dolphin II as well.

Xhorse Dolphin /Condor XC-MINI Cut House Key, Possible?

The answer is yes. With Xhorse M4 Clamp, it’s allowed to cut single & crucifix residential keys. M4 Clamp supports to work with Dolphin XP005, Dolphin II, CONDOR XC-MINI Plus automatic key cutting machines. 

But what’s worth mentioning is that M4 Clamp does not support cutting residential keys by code for the moment. You should have the original key to copy.

How to cut residential keys with an Xhorse key cutting machine?

This tutorial is taking Dolphin XP005 to cut SC1, KW1 keys as an example.

1. Tighten & install M4 Clamp. Prepare original key & new key, locate the alignment shim.

2. Go to “Universal Key Duplication >> Standard Single Sided >> Shoulder Align >> M4 Clamp”.

3. Insert & fix the original key, aligned it according to tips. Press “Decode key”.

4. Once completed, remove the original key and replace the new one as instructed. Press “Cutting key >> Continue”.

Xhorse Dolphin machine will finish the whole process automatically.

M4 Clamp can easily decode & cut SC1/KW1 keyways. Only to follow the steps above.

In short, Xhorse Dolphin XP005, Dolphin XP-005L, and Condor XC-Mini are able to cut by duplication for single/crucifix house keys.

Xhorse Dolphin II XP-005L User Manual

 Xhorse Dolphin XP-005L system needs to initialize for first use. Learn the steps and basic settings below to start your smart cutting experience.

How to connect Dolphin XP-005L with a smart phone?

1. Download Xhorse APP in App Store/ Google Play, or scan the QR code directly;
2. Power on XP-005Lmachine, open Xhorse APP and switch to the CNC machine interface. Press “Switch Device >> Dolphin II”;
3. Press “Select”to turn on Bluetooth, select XP-005L SN to connect (Users can set up automatic connect according to needs).

 

 

How to do cutting calibration?

1. Press on Dolphin II tablet screen: System >> Machine Parameter >> Cutting Calibration >> Select the cutter diameter installed;

   

 

2. Follow the tips, then press “Start”;

- DO NOT use a cutted key, make sure it’s a brand new HON66 key blank.

- Make sure the probe and cutter at same height.

- Insert M5 clamp and rotate to side A.

 

3. Clean the cutter, probe and working area, press “Continue”to finish.

 

What’s in Dolphin XP-005L System option?

There are 6 main functions in System: machine parameter, system setting, history, my favorite, update center and WLAN connection.

 

Here users can perform basic operations, such as machine calibration, cutting setting, language setting, query history, update version, WLAN connection, etc.

 

• Machine Parameter

Here users can self test machine, calibrate various parameters, set cutter diameter, cutter speed and move speed during cutting.

1. Cutting setting: set the spindle speed, move speed, cutter diameter and buzzer switch.

 

2. Cutting calibration: calibrate machine for first use.
3. Self test

- Deviation detection: detect M5 clamp parameters.

- Motor measurement: check the status of X, Y, Z axis and spindle motor.

- Electrical conductivity: test the conductivity of probe and clamp, milling cutter and clamp.

- Altitudes detection: check whether the height of the probe and the milling cutter are on the same level.

 

4. Parameter list: display relative parameters between probe and milling cutter recorded by the machine.

 

• System Setting

1. Language setting: change system language, covers English, Spanish, French, Thai, Polish, Italian, Portuguese, Hindi, Hebrew, Korean, Indonesian, Chinese.
2. Set password: a startup password can be set to prevent children from touching the machine.
3. Unit setting: set millimeters and inches freely as common units.
4. General setting: switched on/off Bluetooth, adjust screen brightness, machine volume, time and date.

 

• History

Users can query machine cutting records, make notes and cuts here. This function requires networking.

 

• My Favorite

Users can collect the specific key blanks in Vehicle Database or Cut By Code. Finding the options collected here as a cutting operation shortcut key.

 

 

• Update Center

How to update Dolphin II XP-005L firmware & database version?

Follow the path to press on tablet:

System >> Update center >> Red label >> Update >> OK

 

Here will display the current system firmware & database version. The updateable version will be marked with red color. Otherwise, no need to update.
